Cisco Transceiver

SFP-10G-LR

This is basically a duplex LC SFP transceiver that has been designed for optical communications. It is rated for up to 10 kilometers distance and bandwidth of 10Gbps. The acronym “LR” stands for “Long Reach”. It has been designed to support DOM optical diagnostic at the same time operating at a wavelength of about 1310 nanometers (NM). One of the interesting things about this hardware product is that it supports DOM which is capable of bringing more convenience for efficient operation and monitoring. It helps administrators to carefully monitor as well as make feedbacks of the operations of transceivers.

Overtime this product has been compared to the SFP-10G-LR-S when it comes to its physical appearance and certain internal features, however, there are certain things that differentiate them from each other.

Specifications

  • It has an SFP transceiver type
  • It has a maximum data transfer rate of 10,000 megabytes per second (Mbits/S)
  • It has an LC fiber connector type
  • It has a wavelength of about 1310 nanometers
  • It can operate in a temperature of -40° to about 80° C
  • It has a minimum and maximum TX power of -8.2 dBm and 0.5 dBm respectively
  • It offers a solid optics of 10 kilometers link length

Features

Some of the main features of this product include but are definitely not limited to these;

  • It is currently the smallest 10G form factor module transceiver for greater density in the market at the moment
  • It comes with a swappable input/ output device that can be plugged into any Ethernet SFP
  • It offers digital optical monitoring abilities that facilitate strong optical diagnostic capability.
  • For proper identification, it comes with a Cisco quality identification that helps a Cisco platform to identify if the module is certified or not

Benefits

Some of the many benefits of this hardware product include;

  1. They are ideal for long-range communications; since this product is an LR or “Long Reach” transceiver, it is capable of supporting long-range communications. It is ideal for wiring buildings on a large campus. It can also be used to set up a MAN (Metro Area Network). While they may either be single-mode or multi-mode fiber, they are all intended for over 100 meters applications. In essence, they are capable of supporting transmissions of several kilometers.
  2. They have a wide range of features; while the SFP-10G-LR transceiver is more expensive than the other SFP+ standard transceivers, it has a number of features that others do not have. It has certain features that are ideal for individual and enterprise data center applications.
  3. It supports about three protocols – Optical Transport Network (OTN), Ethernet, and the Wide Area Network Physics (WAN-PHY). It also has a TAA compliance.

Downsides

  1. It is expensive; unlike the other SFP- standards, this hardware product happens to be more expensive. According to reports, it is about 50 to over 80% more expensive than the other SFP standard transceivers.
  2. With a longer operating temperature range than some of the other SFP standard transceivers, this product is not ideal for any short-distance transmission.
